About the event

Art has long been used collectively by various cultures for its ability to represent the invisible thread that connects everyone and everything together, and poetry is no exception. Think of the oral storytelling tradition that is integral to the strength and unity of many tribal communities, for example, or group chanting or prayer, used for spiritual connection. Collective poetry and storytelling can be used as a powerful practice to transcend the ego entrapments that inhibit us from expansion and growth.

In this workshop, held here at the Sanctuary, we will discover new avenues of connecting with ourselves, our community and environment through poetry - providing a healthy alternative to the isolation, division and alienation, that plague our society today. We will come together as a loving and supportive team to connect your own individual creative expression to the reality of the collective mind. Here, we will discover answers to the most important questions we have as human beings, finding they are universally shared with our brothers and sisters.

During this workshop you will:

~ Participate in 3 collaborative writing activities that are targeted to help us move through our Past, Present and Futures, at both the individual and collective levels.

~ Experience thought provoking self-reflection and group discussion based on several poems that we will read together along with guided prompts.

Activities are based in the philosophy of “automatic writing,” designed to facilitate the surfacing of thoughts and feelings that may have been kept buried at the unconscious level. Confronting these may lead to reawakening and growth. In the absence of reason, structures that imprison “pure” thought and expression, we are free to flow into spiritual transformation.

“Just beyond yourself.

It’s where you need to be.

Half a step into self-forgetting and the rest restored by what you’ll meet.”

-David Whyte

What kind of magick might we restore if we could reach just outside of ourselves for a moment? And how might we use it to empower and transform our lives?
